Springing Forward and Looking Back: 10 Years as a Vegetarian

Starting this March, I have been a vegetarian for 10 years. 10 whole years. A decade, people. That’s a very large chunk of time. So while we spring forward, and capture an extra hour of end-of-day light, I will also be looking back for a few moments, to digest this anniversary of sorts. One of the questions I get most frequently, and most vegetarians get most frequently is, “So, why did you become a vegetarian?” As much as I would love to say my reasons for being a vegetarian now when asked that, the reason I started is almost laughable. It happened in 8th grade science class. The lights were dim, and we were watching a movie on the effects of salmonella. There was a man with a British accent menacingly narrating (making the entire thing so much more terrifying, in my opinion), and scenes of a guy eating a pink piece of chicken, dotted with blood (which also did not add to the appeal of the film).
